“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
Words. String them together and inspire a heart to soar. Turn and twist them and choke the life out of a soul. They’re just a bunch of syllables, right? What’s the big deal?
Scathing or meant with well intent, those syllables mean more to the one on the receiving end.
Syllables strung together form life to the hearer. How does it feel to hear affirming words? Like an elixir, right? Like drinking in an unforeseen presence spurring you toward a goal you alone can’t reach. Or ingesting a parent’s sage words of wisdom when life’s taken you far off course. Or lapping up the sweet taste of a Godly promise from Deuteronomy 31:8 – “I will neither leave you nor forsake you.”
In my life, not every syllable strung together ingested well. I had to live through name callings, taunts and false allegations. Because my personality did not gel well with popular culture, I remember the sting of rejection and the venom from the words of many fake friends…
Four eyes… Blowed (a reference to ugly…oh yeah, called that too)… Bucky Beaver… Bigfoot.
I soon learned peace and satisfaction comes from trusting in other syllables, the sweet string of words from the one and only true Word – God. He calls me by a string of better names because He personally knows my name. He loves me with a deeper passion because the Word He created joined together to love this world unconditionally. I could surrender my heart to those syllables where negative words spoken are silenced and affirming words are offered up in their place.
What syllables have strung your story together? If words from people defined and devalued who you were, let me introduce you to the Word who truly values who you are. He’s ready to string together beautiful syllables over your life and your future.
